Biography
Born in Montluçon in 1960, Dan Aucante is passionate early for photography. At 25, he decides to travel round the world. From then on, his attraction for photography will focuse on the human being and his environment.
In 1997, after his studies at the “Spéos” School, living in Paris, he becomes an independent photographer. These projects related to the living scene lead him to collaborate with the Theater of the City of Paris, The National Center of Dance and the and artist like Christian Lacroix or Roland Petit. He very soon specializes in artists’ portraits for the press.
French institutions such as The Natural History Museum, the Social Action of the City of Paris, the State Secretariat of Overseas and the Regional Councils of Ile-de-France order him illustrated reports.
He taught black and white printing during 7 years at “Spéos“ Institut. Since then, he has been organizing photographic workshops for teenagers with learning difficulties and evening workshops for adults at the Education League.
At the same time, he puts a lot of himself into personal and artistic projects. Between 1998 and 2003, he commits himself to photography of deprived neighborhoods in Paris. In 2004, he continues on the topic of social exclusion through a series of portraits of elderly people with Alzheimer's disease.
Dan Aucante's work is driven by the strictness and strong demand of his process, which makes his personal pursuit a constant challenge. Thus, in 2002, he returns to black and white silver photography by adopting amedium-format. In a series entitled “Limites” along the European’s west coast, he takes a closer look at the faddish and vain steps of men facing eternity.
Since 2005, in “Le Temps des Grenadines“ whose main theme is childhood, he dwells upon themes such as the passage of time, the memory, mystery and dream.
A book, "Le Temps des Grenadines" was released by Bergger Editions in June 2019 and was a finalist for the 2019 HIP Prize.
In 2015, he is supported by the DRAC in academy (regional education authority) during artist's residence of 10 weeks for new series " Fire Game " approaching the world of teenager and their environment.
In 2018, a new project " Les Ecorcés" is work in progress.
